Winter illnesses are up: Seven steps you can take to stay healthy

by Joy Irvin and Alexis Mee, school nurses

We are in respiratory and viral illness season, and illness-related absences have increased. The most common symptoms we are seeing include headache, sore throat, cough, congestion, and fatigue. A few simple steps can help reduce the spread of illness and keep our community well.

  • Stay home if symptoms meet our illness policy criteria (see our Health and Safety page).
  • Monitor symptoms such as headache and fatigue, which, on their own, do not always require staying home.
  • Test early when symptoms begin, using an at-home antigen test that includes COVID-19, Flu A, and Flu B.
  • Wear a mask when symptomatic to help protect others and reduce transmission.
  • Practice thorough handwashing with soap and water (20 seconds of scrubbing!)
  • Reduce your exposure to germs: Sanitize your personal devices, wash your water bottle regularly, and avoid sharing food or drinks with others.
  • Report diagnosed, contagious illnesses to info@lakesideschool.site or make a comment in the Veracross absence portal.

Thank you for your care and partnership in keeping our community healthy.

Warmly,

Nurse Joy and Nurse Alexis
