Show your Lion spirit on Lakeside Athletics' April 6 Pride Day and April 24 Tailgate!

by Chris Hartley, director of athletics

Hello, Lions Fans!

One of the ways that Lakeside strives to build community and create a positive, uplifting environment is by bringing everyone together around athletics events.

We have two exciting days planned for the community to gather and cheer on our teams! Everyone in our community is invited!

First, on Monday, April 6, we will host one of our most pride-filled events of the year: Lakeside's Pride Day! This year, our annual event is paired with a home girls varsity lacrosse game; the Lions will take on Issaquah at 5 pm. You will see some great lacrosse, be in community with lots of Lakeside fans supporting student-athletes, share in free food, and have the opportunity to pick up some Lakeside Pride swag so you can celebrate being a Lakeside Lion all year round!

By attending, you will also be part of Lakeside’s ongoing commitment to create an inclusive space for all members of our community. Showing up matters. Pride Day is a way to celebrate the strength of our community’s diversity and show support for LGBTQ+ students, employees, and family members. Lakeside Athletics launched our school’s Pride Night around seven years ago, with the knowledge that, across the nation, LGBTQ+ youth are targets of hazing and bullying in the realm of athletics at significantly higher rates than students with other identities.

We want Lakeside to be a place where LGBTQ+ community members are valued, celebrated, and loved. Pride Day is just one of the ways that Lakeside Athletics seeks to support all of our students and build safe spaces in athletics for those who identify as LGBTQ+.

This free event is for everyone, and we’d love to see you there! We hope that you will join us to celebrate our community and to show support for LGBTQ+ students, employees, and family members on Monday, April 6.

Secondly, on Friday, April 24, we will host a very special Spring Tailgate, with special guest Kai Bynum. This is a time for our community to say thank you to Dr. Bynum, who stepped down as head this winter in order to prioritize his health. You can read more about this aspect of the tailgate in this update.

Tailgates are some of my favorite moments of this year, and this one will be particularly special to me because it features the team I coach! We will also be honoring our seniors before the game. Our boys varsity lacrosse team hosts Bishop Blanchet and the game begins at 4 p.m. Festivities kick off at 3:30 p.m. Volunteers from the PGA will be serving food on the Quad, and participants can look forward to music, giveaways, logowear sales, and an exciting game!

We hope everyone can attend! Please make plans to come to campus, have fun, say farewell to Dr. Bynum, and cheer on the team!
