Individual efforts and ensemble excellence in spring competitions

From individual to ensemble, from math to memoir, students performed, created, and challenged themselves in regional and national competitions this spring. Please join us in congratulating them on these celebrations of their accomplishments in math, music, drawing, painting, photography, digital art, journalism, fiction, poetry, memoir, critical essay, and more!

From P.E. class to the gallery wall

Visitors to the Yuan Ru gallery in Bellevue this spring enjoyed works by both Grace L. ’28 and Yoona P. ’31 in a student exhibition. Yoona’s painting (above) took its inspiration from friendships formed in Lakeside P.E. class, and was accompanied by her original poem:

One Summer Day

One interesting PE class,
That’s where it all begins.
We laugh at nothing,
Cry at secrets,
Lockers full of snacks,
Hallways loud like riots,
Lunchroom drama like novellas,
Everlasting giggles and dreams,
Standing by each other,
We walk this endless hall together.
You’re not alone.

Math team moments

Lakeside mathematicians were well-represented in the Young Women in Mathematics program this year, with Hannah M. ’27 and Laura W. ’28 taking home certificates, and Erin B. ’28 an award, in recognition of their performance on the Mathematical Association of America’s AMC exams. Awards are given to the top five scorers nationally, and certificates to the top five in the Pacific Northwest section (covering Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Montana, and parts of both Idaho and several Canadian provinces).

Based on scores from fall and winter exams, nine Lakeside students qualified for the USA Math Olympiad: Amy C., Vishnu M., and Immanuel W, ’26.; Hannah M. and Raymond Z. ’27; Erin B. and Laura W. ’28; and Eason D. and Terence W. ’29.

In this year’s USA Math Olympiad, three seniors — Amy C., Vishnu M., and Immanuel W. — earned bronze awards in the USAMO exam, placing them in the top 36% of qualifiers. In the USAJMO, for participants up to 10th grade, Lakesiders Terence W. ’29, Eason D. ’29, Laura W. ’28, and Erin B. ’28 all took home a variety of recognitions. Dean Ballard, Upper School math team coach, shares that both versions of the exam feature a two-day series of “exceptionally challenging, proof-based math problems.”

One of the most coveted outcomes of the Math Olympiad is an invitation to the Math Olympiad Program, a three-week June intensive training program, which this year issued invitations to Laura W. ’28 and Erin B. ’28.

Ensemble efforts and flying solo

Students competed in the Washington Music Educators Association State Solo and Ensemble Contest this spring. Lakeside’s string quartet took second place, with members Charlie L. ’26, Kabir S. ’27, Caileen W. ’27, and William W. ’27.

In the solo category, Emil K. ’28 won on French Horn, Kabir S. ’27 placed second on viola, and Caileen W. ’27 placed third on violin.

NCTE Achievement Awards

Khaos K. ’27 received a “Superior” distinction in the 2026 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing. This year’s prompt for entries was “The joy and power of reading.”

Making news with Tatler

Four Tatler staff members were recognized for their writing at the Journalism Education Association’s national spring conference, held this year in Minneapolis. In the on-site, time-constrained “write-off” competition, Matthew K. ’28 and Nami G. ’28 received honorable mentions in the categories of current events/headline writing and news writing, respectively. Natalie G. ’28 received a citation for excellence in editorial writing. And Oliver T. ’28 received the competition’s highest honor: a superior in the category of feature writing.

USA Biolympiad

After taking the semifinal exam hosted on Lakeside's campus, Emma L. ’27 qualified a 2026 USA Biolympiad national finalist, with finals taking place in Massachusetts in summer 2026. Emma is one of three national finalists from Washington state.

Robots, genetics, and more with Science Olympiad

Lakeside's Science Olympiad team took third place in regional competition this year, followed by sixth place in the state tournament. Individual students also garnered state medals:

Did we miss something? Lakeside students lead full lives, and spring is a big season for awards! We love to recognize ways students’ work in the classroom is being acknowledged in the larger community, but we don’t always hear the good news. Feel free to let us know about other student accomplishments related to Lakeside classwork at info@lakesideschool.site
