I served as advisor to affinity groups. I visited classes and spoke on class, race, and gender issues. I talked publicly about why diversity was important for our school. I represented Lakeside at workshops, conventions, and other groups. I promoted the school with families of color and with educational professionals of color. I was a pretty aggressive faculty recruiter. I put up pictures of different student faces around the school so that all who entered Lakeside facilities would see people who looked like them. I tried to intervene in conflicts so that the conflicts did not become wars. I never did anything great. I just kept the discussions going. — June 2, 2010, T.J. Vassar ’68 autobiography
