Celebrating South Asian culture through Bollywood and dance

by Aman V. ’23 & Nour G. ’22

The South Asian Affinity Group (SAAG) was founded just three years ago with the mission to cultivate a space for South Asian Students to explore their culture and identity in a safe space. Our work is centered around building community through spreading awareness and having fun as a group. What better way to celebrate traditions and contemporary culture than through Bollywood, whose influence has been central to South Asian culture for decades, and dance — a universal message of joy and excitement!

To showcase the wide variety of Bollywood music and to (of course!) highlight our phenomenal dancing skills, we put together a mashup of three popular Bollywood songs: Kala Chashma (Black Glasses), Gallan Goodiyan (Sweet Talks), and Kar Gayi Chull (Made me Crazy). The choreography for these dances is diverse and includes some hip-hop, bhangra, and Zumba moves! This is the first year SAAG has held a dance event like this, and we have put in hours of practice and dedicated many free periods to put this together. We are so excited to share this video with the Lakeside community and to have an opportunity to share South Asian culture across school. We hope you enjoy!
