End-of-Summer Action Items & Important Info

Contact your counselor with questions after reviewing the information below.

ACTION ITEMS

  • Mark your calendar:
    • 9/02 & 9/04: Each senior is required to attend a Senior Class Meeting in Kent Evans with the counselors to discuss deadlines, procedures, and other important information on either September 2 from 12-1 pm or September 4 from 3:30-4:30 pm
    • 9/09: We will be hosting an optional College Coffee Talk for Senior Parents & Guardians in Kent Evans from 7-8:15 pm. (There will also be a livestream link for parents and guardians to attend virtually).
    • See a full calendar of events on the Resources Page.
  • Before your summer meeting with your counselor:
    • Write a draft of your essay to review at your meeting. Paste the essay into the Google doc your counselor shared with you last spring before your meeting.
    • Update your college list inSCOIR. Trim your "Following" list to 15 - 20 schools, including at least three to five Foundations (we'll continue to trim this list over the fall). In addition to websites, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, and other guidebooks, you can consult the Resources Page.
  • Before August 29:
    • Complete the Summer Questionnaire in SCOIR. To access it, login to SCOIR and you will find the questionnaire listed on the homepage/dashboard. Click on “Go to Form” to fill out the questionnaire (It will take about an hour to complete).
    • Watch the four Common App videos on the Resources Page and fill out the information within the "My Common Application" section, but don’t submit the Common Application. For now, you can leave the college-specific information in the “My Colleges” section blank.
  • Before September 5: Register for the optional October 10 School-Day SAT and/or October 14 School-Day ACT here (only the student can complete this form). The fee is $75 per exam; students will be billed by Lakeside after testing. Students who qualify for ACT/SAT fee waivers will test at no cost.
  • Before September 12: Email your counselor, if you are considering fall course change(s), for their approval. Note: if you are switching an English or history elective for an elective in the same subject (i.e., English to English, history to history), you do not need to consult your counselor.
  • Sign up for Fall College Visits. Dozens of colleges will visit Lakeside over the fall. Students are strongly encouraged to attend these visits to learn more and demonstrate interest.
    • To sign-up in SCOIR, in the upper right corner of your SCOIR homepage, click the “Me” button to open the menu. Scroll down and select "Visits and Deadlines." This list will be continually updated through the fall as new appointments are booked. While this list is only accessible to students in SCOIR, we will share a more complete list of visiting colleges with parents/guardians in September.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • College Visit Programs for Underrepresented Students. Some colleges offer in-person and/or virtual programs to help underrepresented students learn about their schools. Appily provides a listing of such programs. Discuss with your counselor if you want to learn more or apply.
  • UK Universities. If you're starting the UCAS application to UK universities, link your application to the "Lakeside Centre" by entering our buzzword, "LakesideLions2026" during the registration process. Your counselor cannot complete the required reference if you do not link your application. Use the resources on the UK College Admissions site to support your application.
  • UC applications. The University of California (UC) application deadline is December 1. In September, we will share a "tip sheet" on completing the application.
  • Third-Party Scholarships. Most third party scholarships (scholarships given by organizations other than colleges) have deadlines after the new year. A few, including Coca Cola Scholars, have sooner deadlines. Awarded annually to 150 students, these $20,000 scholarships recognize students with high academic achievement who have deeply impacted their communities through leadership and service. Discuss with your counselor if you might apply.
