Dear Sophomores and Parents/Guardians,

Communicating with students, parents, and guardians is a priority for the Lakeside college counseling office. While one-on-one meetings with students begin in January of junior year, there are many resources and programs that families can access at any time.

College Counseling Resources Page

Watch videos and review answers to frequently asked questions on course selection, athletic recruiting, standardized testing, researching and visiting colleges, paying for college, and more. Our Resources page is accessible here (we suggest bookmarking it) or from your Veracross portal. To learn more about how to use this resource, watch this brief video.

Attend a College Counseling Event

Our Resources Page has a calendar dedicated to college counseling events. Or, use the online school calendar. Look for "college" events using the search bar or filter events using the blue icon at the top right of the calendar. Approximately a week before each event, students, parents and guardians will receive an email reminder, as well as registration information, if applicable. Upcoming events within the next month include:

  • Coffee Talk for Parents & Guardians on Testing: September 25, 8:30-9:45 am, Fireplace Room or Virtual. Watch the Standardized Testing Video on the Resources page beforehand.
  • Mock PSAT (Virtual and Remote): October 17 (classes canceled) - registration opens late September
  • Mock ACT (Virtual and Remote): November 8 - registration opens early October

Can’t attend? Watch the Video or Listen to the Recording

We realize that attending events, even virtual ones, isn’t always possible. Thus, we strive to make every event accessible by posting a video recording on the Resources Page. Please allow up to one week after the event for the recording to be posted. (All recordings from last year remain available.)

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Registration

Priority Registration for AP exams begins shortly after October 1 (all students and parents/guardians will receive an email). To learn more about AP exams, read the Testing FAQs on the Resources Page.

Meet the College Counseling Team

While we look forward to meeting you in person, you can learn more here about the college counseling team.

*********

Finally, we will continue to provide students and families with relevant and timely information on the college process. For example, in January, the college counselors will review every Upper School student’s transcript and comments and provide their advisors with recommendations for course sign-ups.

While we’re unable to meet one-on-one until January of junior year, we hope these resources answer most questions and offer tools for families wishing to learn more. We look forward to seeing you at an event and to working with you and your student in the future.
